History & Traditions

Discover the stories, the songs, and the spirit that make every summer at Willow Lake legendary.
Three Generations of Family Leadership
The Willow Lake story began in 1980, when our founder, Bea Weissman, envisioned a place where kids could truly be themselves. She believed that a summer camp should be more than just activities – it should be a warm, nurturing community that feels like home.
For nearly 50 years that vision has remained in the family. Led by Wendy Saiff and Charles Maltzman, and now with Jake Weissman representing the third generation of leadership, Willow Lake continues to be family-owned and operated. We don’t just run a camp – we carry forward a tradition of excellence, safety, and heart that has served North Jersey families for decades.

The Thrill of the Breakout
At Willow Lake, "Color War" is known as Olympics, and it is the most anticipated event of the summer. The tension builds for weeks until the legendary Breakout – an unexpected, high-energy spectacle that officially kicks off the competition. If you walk into our pavilion, you’ll see the names of every past team etched onto our Olympics plaques. These plaques represent decades of sportsmanship, teamwork, and camp spirit hanging for every new generation of campers to see.
History in the Making
We look back at our history with pride, but we look forward to the future with even more excitement. Every summer is a chance for your camper to start their own tradition, find their own voice, and become a part of the Willow Lake family.

The Road to the Finals
For our older campers in Senior Camp, the summer builds toward the Sports League Finals. It’s where instruction meets competition, and where our athletes showcase the skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship they’ve developed all season long.
