Unit Leaders

Unit Leaders are teachers and adults who supervise an entire age group/unit.  They are responsible for everything in the unit and directly supervise the counselors and campers in every aspect of their camp experience.  Unit Leaders meet with the Directors before and after camp each day to review all pertinent information that arises regarding group dynamics, food issues and scheduling.

Unit Leaders serve as the primary liaisons between camp and camp families and are responsible for all communication with parents, from the pre-camp phone call through the final day of camp. Because Unit Leaders are always around their campers, they know everything about them and are able to communicate with parents about personal situations which may arise.

A Senior Counselor is in charge of a group of 15 campers.  They supervise the staff working under them and make sure the group dynamic is positive and that the group is safe and enjoying camp!  All Senior Counselors must be entering the equivalent of their sophomore year of college.

Additional compensation available for counselors who are selected as Bus Counselors.

Every camp group has a counselor(s) who is/are active participants in every aspect of every camper’s day.  The bond formed between camper and counselor is extremely important and often dictates how a camper likes camp.  Willow Lake counselors are active, patient, warm, friendly, fun, energetic and responsible.  They also must demonstrate good listening skills and be able to relate to children and sincerely care about their needs.  Counselors must be entering a minimum of either 11th grade or 12th grade.

Additional compensation available for counselors who are selected as Bus Counselors.

Lifeguards teach swim instruction each morning to campers in small groups.  In the afternoon, lifeguards are in charge of guarding our heated pool complex. Lifeguards are required to have current Red Cross certification valid through the last day of camp.

Specialists

Specialists are in charge of providing instruction to campers in a specific activity area with the support of the group counselors.  While we have a curriculum in place for each activity, we encourage our specialists to bring their own ideas and help further develop the program in ways that align with the camp’s philosophy.
